چکیده

The Soret effect, as it occurs in the diffusion of solutes in crystals, is analyzed using the principle of microscopic reversibility whereby an approach is developed for interpreting and computing Q*, the heat of transport. To compute the transport of energy during the diffusion jump process, and then Q*, the processes of thermal activation to the transition state and the decay from the transition state are considered to be inverses; thus the net process is reduced to the analysis of the purely mechanical decay process. Molecular statics and dynamics are then suggested as the means to simulate the decay process and the case of carbon diffusion in body-centered cubic a-iron is so analyzed as an example. Our results show that, for the case Q* Qm, where Qm is the activation energy for carbon diffusion, this is in agreement with experimental evidence reported in the literature. Thus both the sign and magnitude of Q* are correctly predicted. Various cases, such as the diffusion of substitutional solutes and vacancies, are also considered within our approach along with implications for future study. 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Characterization of unsteady double-diffusive mixed convection flow with soret and dufour effects in a square enclosure with top moving lid

The present study considers the numerical examination of an unsteady thermo-solutal mixed convection when the extra mass and heat diffusions, called as Soret and Dufour effects, were not neglected. The numerical simulations were performed in a lid-driven cavity, where the horizontal walls were kept in constant temperatures and concentrations. The vertical walls were well insulated. A finite vol...

Flow Over an Exponentially Stretching Porous Sheet with Cross-diffusion Effects and Convective Thermal Conditions

This article investigates the influence of cross-diffusion on the viscous fluid flow over a porous sheet stretching exponentially by applying the convective thermal conditions. Velocity slip at the boundary is considered. The numerical solutions to the governing equations are evaluated using successive linearisation procedure and Chebyshev collocation method. It is observed from this study that...

Effects of thermal diffusion and chemical reaction on MHD transient free convection flow past a porous vertical plate with radiation, temperature gradient dependent heat source in slip flow regime

An analytical investigation is conducted to study the unsteady free convection heat and mass transfer flow through a non-homogeneous porous medium with variable permeability bounded by an infinite porous vertical plate in slip flow regime while taking into account the thermal radiation, chemical reaction, the Soret number, and temperature gradient dependent heat source. The flow is considered u...

Soret and chemical reaction effects on a three-dimensional MHD convective flow of dissipative fluid along an infinite vertical porous plate

An analytical study was performed to study effects of thermo-diffusion and chemical reactions on a three-dimensional MHD mixed convective flow of dissipative fluid along an infinite vertical porous plate with transverse sinusoidal suction velocity. The parabolic partial differential equations governing the fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer were solved using perturbation technique and...
